In a study published this week, the Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics reports between 1990 and 2014 the annual injury rate for young soccer players jumped by 111%.

Bryan L. Reuss, M.D., weighed in on these recent findings during a Facebook live video below.

“The take home is that we remember that with any increase in participation, you’re going to see increased stats and increased rates,” says Dr. Reuss. “With increased recognition, you’re going to see increased rates, but the most important take home is to avoid the fatigue, give kids enough rest time, and avoid super-specialization at a young age.”

Notable Findings in Youth Soccer Injuries Report

• The annual injury rate for young soccer players jumped by 111% from 1990 to 2014
• Sprains or strains were the most common injuries, accounting for 34.6% of all injuries
